A Scene at a Railway Platform

Railway station is noise incarnate. One can see mini India there.

Last Sunday I went to the railway station to see my parents off who were to participate in the marriage of my cousin. Outside the railway station it was a fair-like atmosphere. I bought a platform ticket for me. We reached the proper platform from where the train was to depart. We had to walk over an over bridge.

There was a great rush at the platform. People from all stratas of life were there. The rich and the poor jostle with each other. All were waiting for the train to steam in. All ears were trained to listen to the announcements.

People rush here and there with their luggage. Benches proved insufficient to accommodate all the passengers. Many persons were standing putting their body weight on one leg and the other alternatively. Children ran to and fro but not away from their parents. Hawkers moved up and down selling their goods. The platform presented a colourful look with shining bags and suitcases. Ladies sat on their luggage. Book stalls and tea stalls experienced a great rush. While sipping tea the passengers’ eyes were fixed on the signal. Youngsters were laughing and some were hugging one another. Almost all the passengers were in their presentable clothes. A newlywed couple was the centre of attraction.

Policemen were keeping an eye on anti-social elements like the pickpockets, tricksters and children thieves. Apart from the passengers there were the people who had come to see off their relatives and friends. There was a regular announcement of information of trains. Hearing the announcement of the arrival of the train all got alert. The train arrived and everyone moved swiftly. The whole scene presented a battlefield. People ran to find their respective seats. The unreserved coach saw the maximum pushing and pulling. Some passengers virtually threw their children into the compartments through windows. Coolies were running a race. The train was to steam off. People who had come to see off their relatives and friends got down. The train slowly moved. People at the platform waved their hands. Many necks came out of the compartment windows. Many eyes got moist. Many ran with the moving train to have a glimpse of their darlings. Now there was silence. I came out of the platform, hired a three-wheeler for my home.
