On Finding a Coin on the Ground
I have the bad habit of looking towards the ground while walking. Some people tell me that this is very unfortunate. It is because, they believe, only beggars and poor people look towards the ground. Rich and proud people always keep their head high. Such people look forward or even up towards sky. Looking downwards is a symbol of poverty, cowardice and even greediness.
I was much puzzled as I had read that in hell, Mammon, the god of wealth, was in the habit of looking down towards the ground. In spite of all my efforts, I could not give up my habit of looking towards the ground.
One day, I felt elated when I saw a five rupee coin on the ground. It was shining lying on the dusty ground in the rays of the sun. My first impulse was that I should pick it up and put it into my pocket. Then I was reminded of others’ objections to the exercise of looking downwards.
Anyhow, I picked up the coin. But as I was going to put it into my pocket, I saw a poor disabled person walking on the road. He was walking on the crutches. I was overwhelmed with a sense of mercy. I decided to hand over the coin to the poor destitute.
As I offered the coin to the man, he refused to accept it. He said to me, “Sir, I’m a physically challenged person, but I don’t beg nor do I live on alms. I work with my own hands and earn my livelihood. I thank God that my hands are intact.”
I felt awfully ashamed. I threw down the coin to the ground for the one who had lost it to come and find it and have it.
