Language Problem in the Country today
The English ruled over India for about two centuries. They introduced English language in certain institutions. This they might have probably done for their own convenience rather than for the benefit of the India, people. Macaulay is said to be the British official who introduced English in India to create a class of clerks to carry out the policies of the British government.
It must, however, be admitted that some enlightened Indians, prominent among them being Raja Ram Mohan Roy, not only welcomed this policy of the British government but also invited and encouraged the British government to go the whole hog in introducing the use and study of English in India.
The main point is that English is the window to the west. It provides India with an opportunity to learn about the western culture, literature, politics, science and technology and absorb the things most suited to her according to her own necessity. On the other hand, it also enables India to propagate her philosophy, culture and literature in foreign countries.
Everything worthwhile in modern age like science, technology, commerce, management, etc. is studied in English. Without the knowledge of English, India cannot make any progress. Even our freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, etc. got the inspiration for freedom and a democratic set-up from the western political philosophy knowledge of which they got through English.
It is certainly not possible to translate all the knowledge in English into the national or regional Indian languages.
It, however, cannot be disputed that English must not be taught in Indian schools and colleges at the cost of Hindi and regional languages. English is, after all, a foreign language which has the power to suppress the expression of native people.
In any case, India cannot do without English which has now become an international language. English can also serve as a link language between different regional languages and promote national integration as such.
