Subramaniyam Bharati was a poet of modem Tamil. His compositions taste of patriotic fervour. The king of Ettimpur was so impressed by his writings that he conferred on him the title “Bharati” when Subramaniyam was just 11 years old, and also made him his court-poet, the poet laureate. In 1905, when Bengal was to be partitioned, Bharati expressed his anguish in his poems. He edited India and Bal Bharati. He was also active in politics and attended the Varanasi session of the Congress. His collection of poems Swadesh Geet was published in 1907. In 1918, he was imprisoned for writing inflammatory verses. In 1920, he edited Swadesh Milan.
Bharati was bom on 11 September, 1882 at Tinebelli in Tamil Nadu. Nick-named “Subaiyya”, he was a child prodigy who started writing when only 7. By 1908, as a student of class X, he was composing beautiful poetry. “Kopal Pattu” and “Panchali Sapatam” are his famous poems. He died on 11 September 1921.
Subramaniyam Bharati served the cause of the nation through his pen. The nation will always remember him for his fiery verses which in still zeal in the youth. These verses are dripped with his love for motherland. In Tamil Nadu he is almost a house-hold name.
