This Hollywood superstar had s very humble beginnings. Born to an  unmarried mother, she rose to the top with her own efforts taking advantage of opportunities that came her way. Eventually, she was hailed as an actress of rare talents. She was named Laila in her childhood. Later, she adopted the names Sophia Siccolin, Sophia Lazaro and finally Sophia Loren. She was not a very handsome child and spent her childhood in want and penury.

She took her training in acting and started playing smaller roles in sub-plots with her mother. Soon, her talents were recognised and she was given leading roles and became known all over the world for her fine acting. She is now considered an attractive and talented star. She met Carlo Ponti at a beauty competition and they were soon married. Carlo was 20 years above her age and had children from his previous marriage. Sophia has also worked in some of his films.

She was the first foreign actress, who won the prestigious Oscar Award in 1961 for her acting in Two Women. Her romance with Cary Grant and friendship with Marilyn Monroe are well known. She is now over 55 years of age, yet retains her eminence in the world of glamour. Other prominent films of this super star are Edda, Woman of the River, Gold of Naples, Pride and Passion, Boy on the Dolphin Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963) and Arabasque (1966).
