Sir Shri Ram
India : Famous Industrialist
Born : AD 1883 Died : AD 1963
Sir Shri Ram started his career as an assistant secretary in the Delhi Cloth &General Mills on a salary of rupees one hundred per month. By the time he died, he was one of the few noted industrialists of the country. He got the job in Delhi Cloth Mills only because his father Madan Mohan was also working there. Delhi Cloth Mills was at that time owned by the Gurwala family, the famous money lender. Gurwala was a money-lender to the Nawab of Avadh and the Mughals in 1857. The family ran in ruins during the Bank Crises of 1913. At that time, even a prominent Bank like “People’s Bank” closed down. The Delhi Cloth Mills also passed through a great crisis in 1917. However, it heaved a sigh of relief, when it got orders to manufacture tents for the British Army during First World War.
It is to the credit of Sir Shri Ram that he brought this Cloth Mill into the forefront of North Indian Mills. Sir Shri Ram was an able administrator. He had great knowledge of raw materials and cotton which was required for his mill. His idol was Tata. He engaged retired Civil Servants like Dr Dharamveer in the management of mill. Dr Dharamveer had occupied prominent governmental posts when in service.
In 1930, he established a sugar mill in Daurala, U.P. Today many diversified concerns of Delhi Cloth Mills are spread over various places in India, prominent among them being Bengal Potteries, Jai Engineering Works, Usha Sewing Machines, Shri Ram Fertilizers, etc. It was diligent, untiring hardwork, iron-will-power and great ambition that enabled a man, who himself earned rupees hundred a month to find employment for thousands of people. He has set an example for many of his fellow countrymen.
