If there is an actor who completely submerged his identity into the character he played on the screen, it is Sean Connery. The role of Agent 007-James Bond fitted him like a glove and his portrayal of a dashing, cunning, romantic and resourceful secret agent won him innumerable fans throughout the world. One could never think of another person playing that role.
Ian Fleming, who wrote this series about an intelligence agent who overcame every obstacle and came off victorious in the end, was himself in the British secret services. Sean Connery played this part with such realism and elan that people started believing that such a character existed. Such was his hypnotic influence. Connery was born on August 25, 1930 at Edinburgh in a poor worker’s family. He worked as casual labour during his childhood. For some time he served in the navy, too.
Sean won recognition as an actor when he worked in the BBC serial `Requiem for a Heavyweight’ in 1957. He shifted to the US with Walt Disney. The British novelist Ian Fleming was eager to make films on his James Bond series novels. Many top actors like Roger Moore and Cary Grant were being considered for the main role. In the end, Sean Connery was selected. In 1962, he played his first role as James Bond in Dr. No. The film was a roaring success. Thereafter, he played the role of James Bond in From Russia with Love, From 007 with Love (1963), Gold finger (1964), Thunder ball (1966), You Only Live Twice (1967), Diamonds are for Ever (1971) and Never say Never Again (1983). Connery has worked in many other films, the prominent ones being The Man Who would be. King, The Untouchables, The Name of Rose, Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. Sean won the Oscar for his role in Untouchables.
