India : The Nightingale of India

Mrs Sarojini Naidu holds pride of a place among women freedom fighters of India. She played significant roles in each and every movement arranged by Gandhiji and was always in the lead with men. She is also known as the nightingale of India, because apart from being actively engaged in national politics, she made a significant contribution to poetry. As a child, she wrote beautiful verses which impressed her British mentors also.

Gandhiji respected her. She represented him in various foreign countries. In 1919, she went to England. From 1922 to 1926, she was in South Africa to work for Indians there. Later, she went to America. She was the first woman President of the Indian National Congress in 1925 at the Kanpur session.

Sarojini was born in February 1879 in the Chattopadhyaya family of Hyderabad. She was educated at Cambridge, England and was later married to Naidu, a South Indian, as pet her desire.

After independence, as recognition of her services in the national, social and literary fields, she was made Governor of Uttar Pradesh. She had also participated in the round table Conference of 1931 in England. Feather of the Dawn, The Song of India, The Broken Wing are-some of her well-known collection of poems.

Mrs. Naidu’s daughter Padmaja Naidu has also been on the social and political scene of India.
