The most dominant figure of 18th century in music was Johann Sebastian Bach. He was one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music and in his life time composed much of the world’s best known and most appreciated music. His name is bracketed with two other most renowned musicians of the world—Beethoven (Germany) and Mozart (Austria). The 300th birth anniversary of Bach was celebrated all over the world with great enthusiasm. India also joined other countries in issuing commemorative postage stamps on Bach. For 27 years, Bach was a music director in Leipzig. He also held posts at the courts of the Duke of Weimar and Prince Leopold of Kothen. Bach started his music career as an organist, then he became a teacher and finally a composer. Bach wrote about 200 musical works. Though he mainly wrote for organ, yet, he also wrote concertos and suites. His six Brandenburg Concertos are among his most noteworthy concertos. His two choral works namely Mass in B Minor and St. Matthew’s Passion are well known. Well-Tempered Clavier and Goldberg Variations are also his two other famous compositions. It is worth mentioning that most of Bach’s work is religious in inspiration, particularly his choral works.
Bach was born on 21st March 1685, in Germany, in a family of musicians. Bach received his early education in music from his father. Bach was the father of 20 children four of whom also became composers. Towards the end of his life, Bach lost his eye-sight and died blind in Leipzig in 1750, aged 65. Bach was the writer of many famous and rare musical works and is considered the foremost composer in the history of western music.
