Jesse Owens was truly the pride of the black races. German dictator Hitler who himself was a believer in the theory of the superiority of white races in sports, was surprised at the incredible performance of young Owens in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. At Berlin Olympics, Owens won 4 gold medals and established some new records. He won first two gold medals in 100 metre and 200 metre races respectively. The third gold medal that Owens received was in long jump—he jumped 26 feet and 5 1/4 inches. This was a new record in long jump and it was not until 24 years after that it could be broken by some athlete. Owens also participated in 4×100 metres relay race and made a new record. For his amazing speed in the tracks, he came to be called the ‘Flying Owens’. Owens dominated the sports world as an athlete for about half a century and established 11 big records. Owens started showing his talent as an athlete at an early age. When Owen was just 19, he equalled world record in the College athletics meet. This success of Owens attracted wide attention and 28 American universities decided to grant scholarship to Owens. As a dedicated sportsman, Owens was held in great respect throughout the world. In 1955, he visited India also. Once Owens had the unique success of breaking 4 world records within a period of just 45 minutes only.

Jesse Owens was born in 1914, in an ordinary Negro family of U.S.A. In his early life, Owens suffered from financial hardships and once he had to work as a ‘Liftman! also. Owens distinguished himself in sports at a very young age and by the time he was 14, he had already, made a place for himself in athletics. In 1928, he established several new Junior world records. At 21, Owens became an athlete of world fame.

Owens died in 1980 at the age of 66. It was a great loss to the world of sports.
