Harsh Vardhan ascended the throne in AD 606 when only 16, and the same year he started a new era popularly known as “Harsh Samvat”. He conquered the entire Northern region and annexed it to his kingdom to establish a strong empire. As an Emperor, he was well-loved by his public for his generosity, justice and love of the arts. He showed religious tolerance towards all religion, though he himself propagated Buddhism:. His contribution in expanding Buddhism cannot be Underestimated. Huen Tsang, the Chinese traveller, visited India during his reign.
Harsh Vardhan patronised art and literature. Banbhatt of Kadambari fame was his court-writer. Harsh Vardhan himself was. a writer. He is known for his works Naganand Ratnavali and Priya Darshika. Harsh was the last Hindu Emperor of India. He ruled over the entire Aryavart’. He had a commanding personality. As a ruler, he displayed kind-heartedness towards his subject. Harsh Vardhan was the son of Prabhakar Vardhan. He had a sister called Rajyashree. At the age of 16, he ascended the throne after the sad demise of his father but very soon he set out on his campaigns and emerged victorious on every front. He ruled for 40 years. During his reign, it was his practice to hold a conference of Buddhist monks every year.
Harsh Vardhan holds a place in history as a generous and brave emperor. He is remembered with reverence as one of the strong and able rulers of India.
