George Washington is the hero of the American War of Independence and is revered by all Americans as the Father of the country. He was appointed the Commander-in-Chief of the combined armies of the 13 American colonies that fought to get freedom from British rule. After about nine years of war that saw many famous battles, Washington led the American armies to decisive victory. American Colonies gained. independence from the British rule in 1783 and in 1789, Washington was elected the first President of U.S.A., by unanimous choice, which he remained upto 1797. He could be elected for a third term as well but he went into retirement voluntarily, setting the precedent that no President should hold office for more than two terms.

George Washington was born on 11th February 1732, in the state of Virginia. He became a land surveyor in 1749 and later joined the army. In November 1752, he became a Major and with it his career in the army got a boost. In 1761, he completed the 1887 mile long journey of southern states in a horse carriage. In 1775, he was made the Commander-in-Chief of the combined armies of the American colonies that were to fight the British. Though Washington was fighting against several odds, yet by his able military leadership, American armies overwhelmed the British forces and forced Britain to recognize the independence of the United States of America that had been already proclaimed on 4 July, 1776. In May 1787, Washington was elected President of the Philadelphia Conference for drafting the constitution of the new republic. In September 1787, Washington signed on the draft constitution of the United States of America. On 30, April 1789, Washington assumed office as the first President of U.S.A., and held this office up to 1787. Washington died on 14, December 1799.

Besides being a very competent military Commander, Washington was held in high regard for his steadfastness and nobility of his character. His grateful countrymen named their capital `Washington’ as a mark of honour to him.
