Rustam-e-Hind” Gama Pehalwan, who brought the Indian style of wrestling to international sports and lent it credentials, had tricks of trade running in his blood. Wrestlers all over the world avoided defeated Maurice Deriyaz and Ormond of international fame and achieved challenging him in the Indian-style wrestling. Ahmed Baksh Gama threw an open challenge to the English wrestlers in England and defeated their evincible Benjamin Loller. After this, he had a match with Jeviskow, the Polish wrestler. The match lasted two hours and forty five minutes but Jeviskow could not be defeated. A re-match was fixed for the next day but Jeviskow turned tail and fled from England. In the ensuing year, Gama invincibility in the ring.
In 1910, a wrestling match was organised for the award of the title Rustam-e-Hind’. Gama defeated all the wrestlers and earned the title; In 1922, Jeviskow reached India for a match with Gama, who defeated him in just 42 seconds. Gama’s last match was with J.C. Peterson whom he defeated in 45 seconds.
Gama wrestled for many years and always emerged victorious. However, one of his greatest quality was that he had not only a sense of self-respect but was very friendly in nature. Indian wrestling owes its popularity to Gama.
Ahmad Baksh Gama was born in Datiya (Madhya Pradesh) of Kashmiri parents. He was fond of wrestling since his childhood. By 20, he had defeated almost all the national-level wrestlers. For a couple of years, he was with Maharaja of Patiala. Later, he shifted to Lahore, where he remained after partition also. Unfortunately, later part of his life was full of want, poverty and misery. He died in Lahore on 22 May 1960.
