General Dwight Davis Eisenhower was popularly known as “Ike” throughout the world. He was so popular at that time that ‘I like Ike’ was a common refrain in the United States of America.
Eisenhower was basically a soldier. He was the General in the army in 1942. However, he had no experience of a major battle. During the Second World War, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the US forces by President Roosevelt and in the 1944 campaign in France, he was Commander-in-Chief of the allied armies. It was his generalship and farsightedness that brought about Hitler’s downfall and the allied victory.
Eisenhower’s smiling face and confident speech proved to be a boon to the American people. They were fascinated by him. He was elected President twice – in 1952 and 1956.
Eisenhower travelled throughout the world during his tenure. He also visited India where Indian public gave him a rousing welcome. His smiling face reciprocating the greetings of the public will always be remembered by India.
