Edmund Hailey

Edmund Hailey was a British Astronomer. Although astronomy was well-advanced by the 17th century and much progress had been done in spotting various planets, satellites, stars and ascertaining their movements and speed, astronomers were still puzzled by the comets appearing and disappearing suddenly. It was Hailey who solved this riddle for them. The comet he first spotted and studied came to be known as Hailey’s comet. He studied 24 comets. He also helped Newton in his research though he himself was much ahead of Newton in this field.

Hailey was the first to find out and declare that comet (Hailey’s comet) would be seen after every 75 years which established that comet is also a rotating heavenly body like other stars. Hailey also studied these comets that appear after a shorter gap, the shortest being three years and a half.

Hailey had predicted the appearance .of comet (Hailey comet) in 1986. His study of comets was extensive and intensive. He had established that comets revolve round the sun: galley was Professor of Astronomy at Oxford University. The science of astronomy will always remain indebted to Edmund Hailey for his inventive ventures in the study of comets.
