David Ben-Gurian
Israel : Diplomat
Born : AD 1886 Died : AD1973
Ben-Gurian is to Israel what Mahatma Gandhi is to India. Though Ben-Gurian did not have to struggle for long as did Gandhi but the credit of announcing independence of Israel and getting the British to leave Palestine goes to Ben-Gurian.
Ben-Gurian was born in Poland in the town of Polansk. He had to suffer many hardships and indignities because of being a Jew and it was with great difficulty that he reached Palestine in 1906. He started towards establishing an independent Jewish state almost immediately. He formed the first trade union in Palestine in 1915. When Israel came into being after the First World War, Gurian became the General Secretary of the Israeli Labour Party.
It was his fearless proclamation of independent Jewish State in 1948, that forced the British army to leave Palestine. Thereafter, he became the first Prime Minister of Israel from 1948 to 1953. He again took the reigns of Premiership from 1955 to 1963. He was greatly respected by the leaders of his country and loved by his countrymen.
