The man to rouse the nation through ‘Vande Mataram’, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, was a Deputy Collector when only twenty. He studied law and got the opportunity to become a Magistrate. From an early age, he was inclined towards literature. Gradually, he became a writer. In 1882, he wrote Anandmath. Besides, he also wrote novels Krishna Charitra, Durgesh Nandini, Chandhrani,etc.
Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was born on 27 June 1838, at Kuntal Para in West Bengal in a middle class intellectual family. His early education was completed at Midnapore. He was interested in sports and literature. He finished his studies from Presidency College, Calcutta, in 1856. He is considered to be a leading litterateur of Bengali literature.
Bankim Chandra composed the immortal ‘ Vande Mataram’, a song that is now India’s National song. All his works bear unmistakable stamp of nationalism and Indian culture.
On the death of his first wife, Bankim Chandra married second time. He died in 1894 at the age of 56.
