There was a time in Portugal when cruelty and oppression had become I synonymous with Salazar. The name ‘Salazar’ symbolized a tyrant. The tyrannical rule of Salazar has few equals in world history. But, it has to be admitted that despite his cruelty and repression, this man had some such specialities that his name has become of significance in the twentieth century in regard to struggle for power.
In 1932, Salazar became the Prime Minister of Portugal. He was given additional charge of Foreign Affairs and war portfolios in 1936. Salazar remained in power all his life and he used all intrigues and tricks to stick to his office. He was the most hated man not only in his country but in other countries also. Plans were made and conspiracies were hatched to remove him or to eliminate him but of no avail. He stuck on to power undeterred till the end.
Although unpopular in his own country, Salazar continued with his constructive policies for his people. That is the reason why he cannot be ignored by Portuguese historians and dubbed as a tyrant only. He gave Portugal a new contribution. It also goes to his credit that at a time when the entire Europe was involved in the Second World War, he kept his country unaligned. He was responsible for retaining the Portuguese colonies of Africa, Far East and other places. His personality had both positive and negative qualities in abundance and it is hard to forget him for either.
