Alfred, the Great
England : Great Emperor
Born : AD 849 Died : AD 900
Though there have been about 60 odd Kings and Emperors in England, nobody, except Alfred, has achieved greatness and that is why he is known as Alfred, the Great.
In the early days, pirates from Denmark and Sweden used to attack England. Alfred fought them and though initially he suffered defeats, he ultimately defeated them at ‘Slaughter Ford’ and even pardoned them on accepting Christianity. Thus, he brought about peace and forged a new England.
Apart from being a shrewd Diplomat, Alfred was also a brave warrior, a scholar, a writer, an inventor and a law-maker. It was a great achievement for him to have not only defeated the pirates but also made them live peacefully in England, and contribute towards her progress.
Alfred worked towards spreading education and literature through-out England. He got ancient Latin books translated into English, himself doing a lot of translation. He wrote history of the period between Julius Caesar’s attack on England and his own time. He also invented Candle Watch. He tried to regulate the English law, which to this day, is known as Alfred’s Law.
