Alfred Bernhard Nobel has acquired immense fame as the inventor of dynamite and as the founder of the Nobel Prizes. Alfred Nobel was well aware of the misuse of dynamite for destructive purposes and that is why he emphasized its peaceful uses. Alfred Nobel’s invention of dynamite was a matter of chance only. One day he was preparing in his laboratory some nitroglycerine (a highly powerful explosive) which could explode at the slightest jerk. Suddenly, a small fraction of this fluid fell out of the flask into a box of fine earth powder below. Nobel observed that the fluid did not explode and it turned into a paste-like form on getting soaked into the fine powder. He picked up a little of this paste and carefully changed it into a tiny ball. Then he took this tiny ball, out of his laboratory and when he set it off, it made a powerful explosion. Thus, Nobel found a safe way to handle nitroglycerine which he called ‘dynamite’.
Alfred Nobel amassed a great fortune by his invention of dynamite. In 1890, he wrote his ‘great’ will, whereby, he bequeathed $ 9,000,000, the interest earned on which was to be distributed yearly among those who had most benefited mankind the preceding year in different spheres like science, writing and work for place. Originally Nobel Prize were awarded in five disciplines namely Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Physiology, Literature and Peace. In 1969, the sixth Nobel Prize, known as the “Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science” was instituted by the Swedish Government. To receive a Nobel Prize ‘is considered today as the highest honour in the world.
Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm in 1833. In his childhood, he was very emotional and sensitive. Alfred’s father Immanuel Nobel was also a famous scientist and inventor. Alfred Nobel remained a bachelor lifelong. He died at San Marino in Italy in 1896 at the age of 63.
