Acharya Ramchandra Shukla is considered the exponent of modem trend in Hindi literature. He was the first to write a sequential history of Hindi literature and to divide it into different periods. Mr Shukla’s Hindi Sahitya ka Itihas (History of Hindi Literature) is considered the most authentic document on the subject. The path he showed was followed by later day scholars who brought out scholarly works in the field. Mr. Shukla also gave modem form to literary essays. Thus his contribution to the history of Hindi literature has been significant.
Ramchandra Shukla got his elementary education at Hamirpur. Later, he studied at Mission School. After completing his post-graduation he edited Anand Kadambini. In 1900, he came into limelight as a regular contributor to Saraswati Patrika. His poem ‘Manohar Chhata’ has been very famous. Mr Shukla was well-conversant with all genre of literature. His story “Gyarah Varsh ka Samay” (A Period of Eleven Years), published in 1903 became very famous. This was the beginning of the era of Hindi short story, as such the above story has a special significance. Mr. Shukla also edited Nagri Pracharini Patrika. He wrote critical essays on literature, novel, language and other forms. He holds an important place as an essayist. Shukla was born in 1884 in Basti (UP). His father was Pt Chandra Bali Shukla. Ramchandra was married when just twelve. Though famous in the field of literature, he had to struggle for existence.
He died on 2 February 1941 of heart failure. Hindi literature will always be idebted to him.
