Valentine’s Day – 14th Feb.

Valentine’s Day on the 14th of February is an occasion to celebrate the festival of love, friends, lovers, and well-wishers exchange and share cards, gifts, chocolates, and flowers. There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine’s Day. Some experts are of the view that it originated with St. Valentine, a Roman priest. He was martyred for marrying a young couple against the law. St. Valentine lived in Rome during the third century. At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor Claudius Valentine. A lot of people didn’t like Emperor Claudius. He wanted to have a big army. Claudius expected men to join the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought that the new law was cruel. On the other hand, St. Valentine was a priest. One of his favourite activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, he kept on performing marriage ceremonies secretly. One night, while performing the marriage, Valentine was caught. He was thrown in jail and told that his punishment was death. Many young couples came to the jail to visit him. They wanted him to know that they, too, believe in love. On the day of death, St. Valentine left a little note thanking for friendship and loyalty. He signed it, “Love from Valentine.” Thus the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine’s Day started.

“Valentine’s Day celebration, is the showcase of love and emotion.”
