Pitra Paksh

Pitra Paksh is a Hindu festival. It is observed in the month of Asvina. The period of the festival extends over the dark fortnight of the month.

People celebrate the festival with religious fervour. It is celebrated to pacify the souls of the deceased ancestors. On each day of the festival, the eldest son of a family performs certain ceremonies. He offers oblations (pinda-rice balls, etc.) and water for the departed souls. A special food called Kheer’ is cooked on the occasion. The dish is made of rice, boiled in milk. Usually this special food is given to Brahmans and their wives. It is believed that what they eat reaches the departed souls and sustains them in peace.

During the festival, the men of the family do not shave and cut hair or nails. They also do not wear new clothes. It is not permitted during the fortnight. Pitra Paksh, celebrated to pacify the souls of the declared ancestors, has great importance for the Hindus.
