Gurupurab
Anniversaries associated with the lives of the Sikh Gurus are referred to as Gurupurabs (festivals). Of these the important one is the birthday of Guru Nanak the first Sikh Guru. It falls on the full moon day in the month of Kartik. It is also called Kartikpurnima festival.
On Gurupurab, the Sikhs put on new clothes after a ritual bath. Then they go to the Gurudwaras for scriptural readings from the holy book, the `Guru Granth Sahib’. During the day, the Gurudwaras are decorated and people perform Kar Seva. An open kitchen is organized for public eating, feasting and community celebration, highlighting the spirit of fraternity shared among the Sikhs.
Guru Nanakdev was the founder of Sikhism. It is believed that the Guru was an incarnation of a great soul who had come to the world for the well-being of people. He tried his best to spread the message of love for mankind. On this day, people also pay homage to the other ten Gurus of Sikhs.
