Govardhan Puja
Govardhan Puja is performed on the fourth day of Padwa and it is also a day of Diwali celebration. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the lifting of Mount Govardhan by Lord Krishna.
According to mythology, people of Gokul used to celebrate a festival in honour of Lord Indra and worshipped him after the end of every monsoon season. But Krishna wanted to stop this feast. When Lord Indra came to know about this, he became very angry and sent a deluge to submerge Gokul. People of Gokul were scared about the consequences of heavy downpour created by Indra. But Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan with his little finger and sheltered men and beasts from the rain.
On this very auspicious clay, people of North India build a hillock of cow dung similar to Govardhan mountain and decorate. it with flowers. And then the cow dung hillock is worshipped. However, the day is also observed as the days of Annakoot and the day of worshipping of Goddess Lakshmi.
