Deepavali

Deepavali falls on the darkest moonless night Amavasya, on the fifteenth day in the month of Kartik. In Hindi, Deepavali means a ‘row of lamps’. For this reason, the festival is famous as the ‘festival of light’ and celebrate by the Hindus. It marks the beginning of a new year in North India.

Throughout India, the festival is marked with lights, crackers, sweets, feasts and fanfare. Deepavali begins from the thirteenth day of Kartik, known as Dhanteras. People buy new utensils or metal objects and holy items during this period. They believe that these auspicious things would ward off evil and ill health for the whole year. In this period more money is supposed to come to people.

In South India, the fourteenth day is celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi. It is called `Choti Diwali’ by children. Some people offer Ganesh Puja on this day with laddoos. Deepavali is also bonanza time for businessmen. Firecrackers are excessively sold during this season.
