Bhimtal Lake

Bhimtal Lake is a lake in the town of Bhimtal, in Uttarakhand, India. There is an island at the centre of the lake. It is the largest lake in the only real lake district of India. It is around quarter to two km long and half a km broad with a depth of 18 km. It is a sweet water lake. Kathgodam to Bhimtal is at a distance of 10 km and from Nanital to Bhimtal there is a distance of 23 km. Local people of this area call connect this lake with Mahabharat’s King Pandu’s son Bhim and regard it as the lake had been digged by Bhim. There is also a temple of Lord Shiva here, named as ‘Bhimeshwar Mahadev.’ It is a perennial lake which not only supports a large variety of aquatic life but also is a winter stopover for lakhs of migratory birds. The greenery, scenic beauty free of pollution and the mountains around is the major attraction of this lake.
