The International model law provides for equal legal treatment to the users of electronic communication and paper-based communication. Hence India, in order to provide legal recognition to electronic records and digital signatures, enacted the Information Technology Act, 2000. This law provides for the legal recognition of the transactions carried out by means of electronic data interchange and other means of electronic communication, commonly referred to as electronic commerce. This involves the use of alternatives to paper-based methods and also facilitates the electronic filing of documents with the government agencies.
