Fool’s Day – 1st April

You must have played pranks to people on 1st April. In fact, 1st April is considered as Fools Day in nearly all parts of the world. On this day, people play a practical joke to friends and neighbours by sending them mock gifts and inviting them on fake parties. Even foolish messages are sent or tricks are played into doing silly things to them.

Have you wondered how did this system of fooling people on 1st April start? The story goes like this that before 1564, a common calendar was used throughout Europe.

According to this calendar, each New Year began on 1st April. In 1564, however, Charles IX, the king of France, ordered the people to adopt a new reformed calendar. According to the new calendar, the year began on 1st January. Most of the people followed the king’s order, but those who refused to accept the change soon became the subjects for jokes and tricks among their friends and neighbours.

Those people were sent mock gifts, invited to fake parties and tricks were played on them because they were considered fools who clung to a discarded New Year Day. So, be alert on 1st April as you may be fooled by anyone. Sometimes people forget the idea of fooling on this day and become fool. We can’t express anger or anguish on others. Thus this Day, as April Fool’s Day has become customary.
