Gambling in High Society
Horse symbolizes power. We talk of engines in terms of “horse power”. Racing is synonymous with wealth, power, fashion and high society.
Mahaluxmi Race Course in Mumbai is most famous for racing. That is the address of the Amateur Riders’ Club which has more than hundred horses. Horses are bought, sold, stabled and exercised at Mahaluxmi.
The members of the club arrive in luxury made-in-the-west cars. They wear fashionable overalls. Their identity is rich. They all speak of their recent trips to Europe or America. They all claim, they love horses. On the other hand, they express distaste for money earned through racing. “We definitely treat the horse better than a tongawalla does,” they declare. When you can spend Rs. 2,500 a month on a horse for hobby riding, it is easy to be kind to a horse.
Racing is a game of the moneyed people. The race track at Mahaluxmi is managed by the Royal Western Club of India. It pays an annual rent of Rs. 7.5 Iakhs to the Municipal Corporation of Mumbai. The annual license fee paid to Mumbai Government by the Club is Rs. 25 Iakhs. Its wage bills are Rs. 75 Iakhs a year. It pays Rs. 5 crores a year by way of taxes and entertainment fee. A horse costs a lakh or more of rupees.
Taxis race to and fro. People rush fast to ticket windows from taxis then they run from taxis to hospitals. They bet lakh of rupees on the horses and often lose. Poor people have no place here.
