Wedding Ceremony Which I Have Attended

Marriage is a bond which binds two in a permanent and life-long companionship. It is an unforgettable event in the family and is full of feast, pleasures, displays of wealth, and excitement.

This year in the month of April, I went to Kanpur to attend the marriage of my elder brother. We started for Kanpur by Kalka Mail. About forty people were going with the marriage party. I was sitting with my friends. We all were very happy. We had no work to do. My father and my uncle were looking after the arrangements.

My friend Suresh began to sing when our train left Delhi. Everybody liked the song sung by him. We were travelling in very happy and light mood. We had now completely forgotten the usual worries and cares of life. At Aligarh our train stopped and we had some light refreshment and tea. At Kanpur we were very cordially and warmly received by the relatives of the bride. From there we went to the place where arrangements for our stay had been made. In the evening, we proceeded to the house of the bride. We were received quite warmly there and sweets, etc., were served.

After we were served meals, some of us returned to the Dharamshala and a few remained there to witness the actual marriage ceremony. I was one of those who did not return. After a few minor rituals, the main ceremony of the marriage started.

Wearing the best pink saree and costly golden ornaments and with a veil, the bride was brought before the altar. The altar was finely decorated with multi-coloured flowers and buntings. The pandits from both sides were sitting opposite each other. The bride and the bridegroom were then asked to take seven rounds of the fire burning at the altar. They were also asked to give a few solemn words of promise to each other.

The next day the marriage party left Kanpur. We again boarded a reserved carriage, this time in a train bound for Delhi. The bride and the bridegroom got a preferential treatment and occupied a first-class coupe.

The pomp and show with which the marriage took place will ever remain green in my memory.
