एक मुशायरे में रघुपति सहाय ‘फिराक’ के अलावा कई नौजवान शायर भी उपस्थित थे। फिराक साहब के कलाम पढ़ने के बाद एक नौजवान शायर को शेर पढ़ने के लिए बुलाया गया।
उस नौजवान ने शेर पढ़ने के बजाय कहा कि, ‘इतने बड़े शायर के बाद मैं अपना कलाम कैसे पढ़ सकता हूँ?’ फिराक साहब बीच में बोल पड़े, ‘बरखुरदार ! जब आप मेरे बाद पैदा हो सकते हैं, तो शेर पढ़ने में आपको क्या एतराज है।’
