Once there ruled a cruel but powerful kind over the island of Sicily. He was not loved by his subjects. There were many men on the island whom he had treated very badly and who wanted to kill him if they had the chance. In his court, there were some persons who wanted to see their King pleased with them. Because of this, they were always ready to praise him and all his doings. There was one noble in particular who was very fond of acting in this way. His name was Damocles. He wanted to become King. In order to teach him a lesson, the King made Damocles King for one day. The King hung a sword by a single long hair right over his head. Seeing this Damocles jumped up in dreadful fear and in the future, he did not flatter the king with foolish speeches.
