World Heritage Day – 18th April

Heritage Day is celebrated on the 18th of April to take up the issue of preserving the ancient Heritage. The heritage of a country is the depiction of its cultural properties. It plays a vital role in enabling the people to gain an accurate understanding of the history and culture of their country. It is thus imperative that cultural properties which are national properties are protected to ensure that their heritage is conveyed to future generations. Pattyn is the person in charge of promoting the world Heritage Day. The basic idea of celebrating this day is to allow people to know their historic sites. This day was established in 1984.

The historical monuments, books, traditional customs, and practices play a vital role in the heritage of a country. The historical monuments teach masses the history and culture of the past time upon which our present is based. To preserve our monuments, the Archaeological Survey of India plays an important role. ASI is busy in preserving monuments. The Department of culture is busy in making the monument lively through light and sound programme. Heritage also includes literature, music, dance, theatre, painting sculpture, cinema, museums, religion etc. Without this heritage, we would feel a vacuum in our life. The idea and knowledge of our heritage makes our life colourful and gives a platform for further imagination and creation which would become the heritage of the future. Our heritage makes us proud, and gives inspiration for appreciation of our past. It is the need of the hour to take up the issue of preserving the ancient Indian heritage. This day is commemorated to make us aware of our Indian Parampara. A souvenir “Parampara” had been released containing informative write ups on astrology, Vastu shastra and Ayurveda. In a day and age when pills and injections are the order of a doctor, Homeopathy, Ayurveda, yoga, Naturopathy and Kerala’s oil massage therapy is the alternative for slow and cheap medication. These provide relief from ailments as diverse as any disease. These therapies don’t just cure the disease but make the body its own doctor. Hence Heritage day celebration is worthwhile phenomena.
