Sir,
I was shocked to read in your esteemed newspaper of yesterday the sad news of another poor bride’s death, as her parents were not rich enough to meet the unreasonable demand of dowry, coming soon after her marriage. It has become a daily phenomenon to read about such heart-rending incidents. Has humanity completely vanished from our society ?
The heartless, devilish, gruesome torture, the young brides are subjected to, is not only terrible but also poses a valid question – whither is our society heading for ? Can greed make an animal out of a man ? Is there no trust, no love left in human relationship ?
Our society, in which women once used to be worshiped, needs to understand that a human life is more precious than money. And the concept of dowry is completely unjustified and illogical, as it is a share of the bride and not for the bridegroom. Illiteracy and ignorance are the two major causes behind this.
The authorities, and the political leaders in particular, should try their best to generate social awareness against such evil practices instead of being busy in the selfish race for gaining power. The sooner this is done, the better it is for our society and humanity as a whole.
