Understanding Germination

Materials Required:

  2. Sandpaper (80 grit)
  3. Scissors
  4. Watch or clock with a second hand
  5. Bean seeds
  6. Potting soil

Often, the hard coat of a seed needs to be broken down before it can germinate or start to grow. Hypothesize, the seeds that had their coats weakened or scratched will grow ahead of the others.

You can ask an adult to cut two round pieces of sandpaper with scissors.

Glue one to the inner base of the butter tub and the other in the tub’s lid.

Fill six pockets in all four egg cartons with potting soil and place a bean each, in one carton of the four cartoons.

The seeds should be placed separately in every pocket. Mark the carton with ‘Not shaken’. Now place six other beans in the second egg carton and mark it with ‘Shaken 10 seconds.

Repeat the procedure and mark the third carton with ‘Shaken 30 seconds’. Then take it in your hands and shake it hard for 30 seconds. After placing the last six beans in the fourth carton, shake it for 60 seconds and mark it accordingly. Write the time on all four cartons for future reference.

Water the seeds and keep out to dry. Keep an eye on them and make a note of the progress on the seeds and their dates. Water the seeds regularly in order to prevent the soil from going dry.

Study your notes after a couple of weeks and see which seed has grown first. Did the shaking cause any seed from growing at all?

Are the results of the seeds the same? You can carry this task out with other vegetable or flower seeds too.

Does soaking the seeds in liquids such as water or tea affect the germination of the seeds?

Check by soaking some for three and others for five days respectively.
