My dear Nareen,

I received your kind letter yesterday, for which many thanks.

So you feel very lonely in Mumbai in the midst of the modern fashionable world? Cheer up, my hearty friend!

Yes, you’re right: these changing fashions have to be seen to be believed. I think that these days anything is a fashion. Any person out in a negligee, with a bark of tree on him or her, would be fashionable.

Fashions started in ancient civilizations. Right from those early days, each society or each community has its own fashions. For example, during the Roman times, the fashion was white robes and bald heads. During the Egyptian civilization, they had only wrappers to cover their chests and the parts below the waist. Now, since times have changed, the fashions are also undergoing a rapid and revolutionary transformation.

Nowadays the most popular fashions are bell-bottoms, drain-pipes, slim-fit, hippie-style long hair and several other mod fashions. Great stress is laid on colourful and unusual clothes.

However, in the world of fashions, we are going back to the past. The keeping of long hair, for example, was popular in olden times.

Today fashions have changed, and anyone — irrespective of caste and creed – with anything on him/her would be in the latest fashion. These fashions keep on changing every now and then. Indeed, different fashions are in vogue at different times. Even in the world of fashions, “every dog has his day”.

By the way, I have the blessings of quiet, clean fresh air, healthy food, emerald—green fields and trees, crystal—clear streams, and turquoise-blue lakes. As for you, you’re right in the thick of noise and bustle and, of course, the fashionable world of the metropolis. You must be envying me my peace and beauty I Well, have heart, dear Nareen.

We are all well here. Please take care of yourself.

Yours lovingly,

Julie
