The Red Fort of Delhi
The Red Fort of Delhi was built by the great Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The Red Fort or the LalQila is located in the heart of Old Delhi and was previously known as Qila-e-Mu’alla of the then Shahjanabad, Shah Jahan’s new capital.
Construction of Delhi Red Fort started in 1639 and within a span of 9 years, the colossal structure was built. It took more that 10 million rupees during the reign of Shah Jahan to create this structure in red sandstone.
As you enter the Red Fort today, you will find a group of trained guides leaping towards you to adorn in a typically Indian manner to offer their cordiality. You will definitely discover a haven of peace inside the fort after you leave the frantic streets of Old Delhi.
Like most Islamic buildings in India, the Red Fort is octagonal in share. The Red Fort is 90o meter by 55o meter. The height of its tower is about 33.5 meters.
