A Scene outside a Cinema Hall

Small screen has eaten into the supremacy of cinema but it has failed to overthrow its big brother from the arena of entertainment. Craze to frequent cinema is still there perhaps to see the pictures more lifelike. On the day of the release of a new film scene outside the cinema hall is just chaotic.

Last Friday, I went to see the picture ‘London Dreams’ at a local cinema hall. I had a ticket booked in advance, I saw a serpentine queue at the booking window. It was hot and a single fan was rotating on the men in the queue. People of all ages were there. Luckily there was a separate queue for ladies, People in the queue were grumbling about the abnormal delay in issuing tickets. I saw some He-men requesting ladies to take tickets for them. What a fall! People a little behind in the queue were restless as they feared a placard showing “House Full” might not appear, Some bullies tried to overtake others and reach the window but many protested though meekly. There was a quarrel also.

The policeman on duty tried to maintain order but he too was not that tough as he should have been. Two young men were selling tickets in the black market under the very nose of the police. What a collusion! The lucky ones, the proud owners of the tickets, strutted like peacocks. They sipped tea at the tea stall or had cold drinks. They looked victorious. There was a heavy rush at the popcorn corner.

Soon the manager appended the board “House Full” outside the window. Men standing in the queue grumbled but it was all useless. I saw many men entering the manager cabin to play the game of favouritism and nepotism. Some were ready to spend more. I was dismayed to see a man standing in a corner. I approached him. He told me that he had one spare ticket as his friend had to go on some urgent errand. He was finding it very difficult to sell the ticket. He was afraid of being dubbed as a black-marketed.

I saw students in their uniforms. They had bunked to see the movie. College girls were in their colourful dresses. There was noise everywhere. The bell rang and I entered the hall. Inside also there was noise. Soon it subsided.
