A Cricket Match
Cricket is an outdoor game that demands a great patience and time. Still it is the most popular game in the world. It has become an addiction. When a match starts the nation comes to a standstill. Work gets paralyzed. In addition to the players the watchers deserve all praise who exercises a great patience on them to sit through the ordeals of this game. People jokingly say—eleven idiots play but eleven thousand idiots watch.
Last Sunday a very exciting cricket match was played between our school team and a team of another school. It was played on the grounds of our school. The captains of both the teams came forward and shook hands. Our team won the toss and decided to bat first.
The match started at 10 a.m. The rival team opened their attack with the bowling of their fast bowler. The ball went like a missile. Our captain played cautiously and intelligently. He did not try to hit the ball hard. He simply stopped it with the bat. After an over was complete, the batsmen changed ends. The bowler was also changed. He was a slow bowler, a spin bowler. Our players proved too good for him. They took 13 runs in this over. During one hour the score rose to one hundred ten. The spectators clapped continuously whenever a player scored a sixer. Then there was a setback. Clever bowling made the wickets fall one after the other. After 40 overs, our team made 210 runs but at the loss of six players. The fielding of the rival, team was superb. In the last remaining 10 overs, our players showed guts and scored 80 runs in all and we lost only one wicket.
Now the rival team went in to bat. Its opening batsman was run out in the very first over. The wicket taker Dilip was given a standing ovation. The second and third wickets fell at regular intervals. Our fielding was also excellent Most of the players were either slipped off or caught out. After 40 avers the rival team had scored 250 runs and they needed 41 runs more to defeat us. Our team captain changed the bowlers regularly. This puzzled the opponents. Still they scored 33 runs and in the last over they were required to take 8 runs to win the match. Our supporters watched the proceedings in silence. Six runs’ were made in five balls. The game was in its crucial stage. The last ball was bowled. The player took one run and ran for the winning one but he slipped. There was no time to reach the other end. He was run out. Our team won the match by one run.
It was a nail-biting show. The ecstatic crowd rushed to the ground to congratulate the winners. The commentary had made the game more interesting. I returned home.
