Hans Christian Anderson, the world-renowned author of Fairy Tales was born in Denmark of a poor cobbler. Could one imagine then that this child from slums would grow to be a world-famous writer of fairy tales one day and a friend of the king of Denmark? Children all over the world read and enjoy his tales.

Anderson’s personal life was not much different from his “Ugly-Duckling”, a tale depicting the sad story of an ugly and neglected chick who turned to be a swan.

As a child, Anderson was lean, thin and dirty. He could not go to school for his parents had no money. He decided to be a singer. He set out for Copenhagen, the Capital of Denmark and tried to attract audience in the streets. But, unfortunately, his raucous voice and out of tune songs failed to attract the public. So, he tried his hand at acting and dancing with music but failed to move the people. While he was engaged in these gimmicks, an acquaintance of King Frederick VI spotted him. Moved by his plight, he pleaded with the King to make some arrangement for his education which the King did.

Anderson started writing for children when he grew up. In 1828, he wrote a satire, full of fun and laughter entitled A Journey on Foot. The book was a success. He wrote a novel too. The king gave him financial assistance for travel across Europe. During his travels, he met many famous people but that did not vouchsafe fame. He earned great name and fame for his tales that transport us to fairy realm of dreams. Some of his famous works are Onali-E-Fidlere, Poets’ Bazar, Fairy Tales, Wonder Stories and Picture Book Without Picture. Almost all his works have been translated into various languages of the world. Anderson was unlucky in his love-affairs. Though in love twice, he could not get married. In fact, he died while an ascetic.
