Shivaji is remembered in history with great veneration. Although a kJ couple of foreign historians have tried to downgrade him, it is now proved beyond doubt that theirs were partial and one-sided views meant to tarnish the image of a great ruler. No doubt, he dreamt of establishing. a Hindu-Maratha empire, but he certainly was not against the Muslims. He was against the exploitation of Indian public by the then Muslim rulers and he tried to strike this fact into them. He had a large number of Muslim soldiers and officers in his army. He never disrespected. Muslim women. Once when a Muslim woman was captured and brought to him after one of the campaigns, he sent her to her camp with due honour and security.

Shivaji was born in April 1627 to Shahji Bhosle and Jijabai. His father wanted his son to be a ‘noble’ like himself in the court of the Muslim ruler of Bijapur, but this was not acceptable to Shivaji. At the age of 16, he collected the locals known as Mavale, organised them and attacked the surrounding forts which fell to him one by one. Very soon, the forts of Singhgad, Javali Konkan, Aurangabad, Surat were uncle’ him. In 1674, after conquering a large area, he established Maratha kingdom and was duly coronated. He was given the title “Chhatrapati”. He ruled according to Hindu system.

Shivaji’s moral strength and his physical courage bore the deep influence of the teachings of Saint Tukaram, Samarth Ramdas and his mother Jijabai. He will always be remembered as one of the brave and intelligent rulers of India.
