What are Marsupials?

Marsupials are mammals which have a pouch, like the one on the kangaroo shown below. Before they are born, the voting of most mammals develop in t he mother’s womb and receive nourishment from her body through a complicated system of blood vessels called the placenta. in the womb, the young mammals are also protected. When t hey are finally born, they are quite well developed, although they may still need much care and protection, as well as nourishment from the mother’s milk. A young marsupial mammal, on the other hand, is not attached to its mother’s womb by the placenta and, when still very young and undeveloped, it leaves the womb and crawls up its mother’s body until it reaches her pouch or marsupium. Once safely in the snug pouch, the tiny creature finds the mother’s teats and begins to feed on her milk. The pouch also serves as a useful ‘carrying cot’ for the baby — even when it is quite large. Whenever it feels frightened, or simply needs a rest, it may hop back into the pouch.
