Outline:

Akbar asked nine jewels to bring most beautiful things…precious stones, etc., were bought. Birbal brought dirty child… Akbar asked why…Birbal replied…for his mother…most beautiful thing.

Story:

1. One day, Akbar the Great gathered his nine jewels, that is, his nine most clever ministers

2. and asked each one of them to produce before him the most beautiful thing they could find.

3. Some brought precious, glittering stones and others brought flowers with the first dew drops on them.

4. However, when Birbal’s turn came, he pushed forward a dirty, ragged-looking child.

5. “What is the meaning of this?” demanded Akbar.

6. “My Lord,” said Birbal, “beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.

7. For this child’s mother,

8. he is the most beautiful thing in the world.”

9. Akbar and all the courtiers were very impressed at Birbal’s wisdom

10. and bowed before him with respect.
