10 Lines on “Autobiography of an Old Coin”
1. The good old days when I was a shining one-rupee silver coin will never return.
2. I wish, I could go into circulation once again. I lie today in a little plastic bag, feeling bored and old.
3. I was born in 1925 in the mint. One side had the picture of King George V, and on the other side I had the words ‘One Rupee’.
4. I travelled from the mint to the Government Treasury in a police van. Then I went to a large bank.
5. An English officer then carried me in his purse. After a month, I was handed over to an Indian sepoy, who carried me in his shirt pocket.
6. One day he dropped me on the floor. I rolled over under his cot.
7. There I joined a band of crumpled papers, chocolate friend’s wrappers, broken buttons, lots of dust, and other bits of rubbish till a sweeper swept us off onto the road.
8. I lay there for some days with nobody to take care of me.
9. One day, a little boy picked me up. He looked at me carefully, turning me round and round.
10. Then he took me home and put me in a plastic bag. Since then, I have been lying here, uncared for, wondering when I will be freed again.
