My Dear David,
I’m afraid that, when this letter reaches you, you’ll be absorbed in reading and regard it as a nuisance. It not only interrupts your study but imposes upon you the time-consuming obligation of replying to it. All the same, please read it and think over its contents, and I shall exempt you from the task of replying to it!
In the first place, let me congratulate you on your excellent performance at the terminal examination. I’m proud of the fact that you are the scholar of our family. But I am told that you study too much at the cost of your health, and bury yourself in your books. Now, that is not good. Health is as important as knowledge. If you neglect your health, it will be difficult for you to realize your scholarly aspirations. Hence you should devote some time every day to playing games and going for a walk. An hour or so spent on the playground every day will refresh your mind and improve your health.
May I, again, advise you not to live to yourself? Try to mix with others and make friends. Being older than you, I know that success in life depends upon so many other things than bookish knowledge. If you think over my advice, I’m sure that you’ll be convinced of its soundness.
With love,
Yours affectionately,
Conrad
