Sir,

Yesterday I was caught in a traffic jam in Old Delhi. It took me about two and a half hours to cover a distance of just three kilometres by car. The cause of this sad and frustrating experience was the disorderly traffic in the busy Chandni Chowk area. The police constable was nowhere in sight as carts, cattle, cycle, rickshaws, tongas, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, vans, buses and human beings jostled with one another to reach their destination- all at the same time. The resultant melee can be well imagined. The consequences were frayed tempers, fights and verbal battles in the sea of humanity during peak hours.

I wonder if traffic on one such a busy thoroughfare cannot be regulated and better organised. It may not be possible to divert the traffic in several lanes as also provide footpaths for the poor pedestrians because of the existing congestion in the area. But the traffic police can at least post constables, say, at every 50 metres or so, to regulate the traffic. If feasible, one side of the road should be closed for a period of time in order to enable the incoming traffic to have safe passage. This can be reversed after sometime. I hope that the concerned authorities will look into the genuine grievances of businessmen and traders as well as shoppers in such busy and congested area in the capital.
