Examination Hall,

June 18, 2….

Dear Satish,

Many thanks for your kind letter, which I received yesterday. I was very glad to read the description to Book Exhibition in your town. In this letter, I propose to give an account of Jawaharlal Nehru’s well-known Autobiography, which I have just finished.

The Autobiography is highly interesting. It reads like a novel. Every line has the ring of sincerity. The book is a faithful record of two things: the writer’s personality and the growth of India’s freedom movement. It is both autobiography and history. I confess I liked the autobiography portion more than the narration of historical facts. Perhaps my mind is not mature enough to value Panditji’s account of India’s struggle for freedom. In the years to come, I hope, I shall appreciate this portion of the book more than I do now.

The story of Panditji’s life has made a great impression on me. I remember every detail. I could not help bursting into a heartily laugh on reading how Panditji in the childhood received a severe beating from his father for stealing a fountain pen. Some portions of the Autobiography are extremely touching. The account of Panditji’s jail life, the death of Pandit Motilal Nehru and the illness of Kamla Nehru almost brought tears to my eyes.

Panditji’s strength of character is revealed throughout the book. He appears in its pages as a penetrating thinker, a man of firm determination, a lover of action and enterprise. Sentiment and weakness of the heart do not touch him, though he was a man of strong emotions, likes and dislikes. This is why the Autobiography has won fame all over the world. It has proved to be a best-seller and one of the most popular books. It has placed Panditji among the greatest writers of the present century.

It is longish book, but we are never aware of its length as we read it. Pages appear to fly before us. I would recommend this book to you whole heartedly. You will find it a rare experience.

Yours sincerely, (X)
