The Life of a Soldier
A soldier is the pride of his nation. He defends the honour of his motherland with his life and blood. He has to rise superior to his family and his own self. His profession brings out the best in him: chivalry, discipline, team spirit, loyalty and steadfastness. His example serves as a beacon light to others who are tame and cowardly. His life is a source of inspiration to the youth of the nation. He has no ‘politics’ in his makeup. He serves the ruling government to the best of his ability.
We love the soldier as much as-if not more than the scholar, the statesman and the poet. The soldier embodies in himself the spirit of youth. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose lives in the memory of the Indian youth much more perhaps than Tilak, Gandhi or Tagore. The great and glorious part he played in the INA movement will be cherished by generations to come. Netaji gave up the career of an official administrator or statesman for that of the soldier who fought for the defense of the freedom of his country.
The Indian soldier in the British days was a hired mercenary. Now he is a national soldier. There is no hard and fast line between the so-called martial and non-martial classes in the Indian army today. The Indian soldier has earned great applause during the last two World Wars from the highest quarters. His performance in the theatres of war have been heroic and daring. He is the finest specimen of humanity, be he a Maratha, a Sikh or a Rajput. He is the best symbol of the secular character of our country.
The soldier in free India helps in many civilian jobs as well: locust-fighting, crop-cutting, bridge-building, road-making, etc. Today he has more opportunities than ever before of mixing with common people.
