Tracking the Insects
Materials Required:
- An adult
- Small paintbrush from a craft or toy paint set
- White paint, the kind used for modeling
- A board that has been on the ground, since long
- A strong stick
- Rubber gloves
Have you ever lifted an old board lying on the ground and seen some tiny animals(beetles, worm etc.) crawling under it? Is this their home or are they just passing by? If it is their home, can they find their way back, if they are moved a short distance away?
Find an old board or a rock nearby that has been there since long. Lift it up carefully with a stick. Are there a number of tiny animals living there? Get a small craft paintbrush and a small bottle of white paint, the kind used for painting models. Use the brush to put one small drop of white paint on the back of the animals that you see under the board? Put the board back in place.
The next day, look under the board again. Are the animals, which were marked with white paint by you, still there? If they are, pick them up and place them on the ground, a step or two away from the board.
Put the board back. If you can’t stay to watch, go back and lift up the board later on, to see if they have found their way back to their home.
